Why it works
Why this email works
- 1The subject names a mistake readers may be making. The order you apply skincare matters hints that a customer's products may be underperforming without blaming them. The preview text promises four steps, four minutes, and a mist that goes on damp skin.
- 2Each step is one heading and one instruction. Step one through step four, each with a heading like Press in the serum and a line on how much to use. A reader can follow it at the sink without scrolling back up.
- 3A customer quote does the persuading. Maya R. says she had the order backwards and her skin is calmer after three weeks. It reads like a note from the counter rather than a claim from the brand.
- 4The bundle price comes after the teaching. $118 instead of $130, with an end date of November 30 and same week shipping. By the time a reader reaches the price, they know what each of the four products does.

Small batch skincare, made in Portland
THE FOUR STEP ROUTINE
Four steps, in this order
Hi Alex,
Most serums and creams fail for one boring reason: they go on in the wrong order. Below is the sequence we use at the counter, four steps, about four minutes, morning and night. Wash your face first.
The order you apply things matters
Step one: mist
Mist onto damp skin
After washing, spritz two or three times and press it in with your palms.
Damp skin pulls in the next layer better than dry skin, so don't wait for it to dry.
Step two: serum
Press in the serum
Three drops is plenty for a whole face.
Warm it between your fingers first, then pat it on instead of rubbing. Give it a minute before the next step.
Step three: cream
Cream seals the water in
Your moisturizer does not add water. It keeps the water you just put on from leaving.
A pea sized amount covers your face and neck.
Step four: SPF
Finish with sunscreen
In the morning, this goes on last. Two finger lengths covers your face and neck.
Reapply at lunch if you are outside.
I used to put on serum and then toner, which turns out is backwards. My skin is calmer after three weeks of doing it in this order.
MAYA R., PORTLAND
