The guide

How to write abandoned cart emails

When to send it

Send it to shoppers who put something in a cart and left the site without ordering. Someone who only browsed is a different email, or no email at all.

It suits a shop selling anything, from a bag someone buys on impulse to a sofa someone thinks about for a week. Each shopper sees their own items in the email.

Keep the email to what they picked out and a link back to the cart. A shopper who left a cart already knows the product; the job is to make checkout easy to find again.

Timing

In AguMail the cart flow starts when a shopper leaves a cart untouched for an hour. The Cart reminder goes out right away, and a second email, Last nudge, follows one day later. Both stop the moment the shopper places an order.

Two emails is the shape of it: a reminder while the cart is still fresh, then one nudge the next day. Shops selling made-to-order furniture or wedding dresses can stretch the gap, but a day between the two emails suits most stores.

How AguMail sends it

AguMail sends this as a flow, so it goes out by itself once you turn it on. The trigger is an hour of no activity on a cart, the Cart reminder fires immediately, and the Last nudge follows a day later. The flow stops as soon as the shopper orders.

Cart flows run on the Commerce plan, from $69 a month, and in the free trial. Your store needs to be connected through WooCommerce, or carts sent through the AguMail API. Choosing one of the templates copies it into your account and opens it in the editor, where every word, color and picture can be changed.

Common questions about abandoned cart emails

How long after a shopper leaves should the cart email go out?

An hour is a good default. It is long enough that they may have been interrupted, and short enough that the cart is still on their mind.

How many abandoned cart emails should I send?

Two. One reminder while the cart is fresh, and one nudge a day later. The flow stops on its own when the shopper orders, so nobody gets a third email after buying.

Does the email need a discount code?

No. Plenty of shoppers come back for the reminder alone. If you do offer something, make it a small, clear thing you can repeat on every cart email rather than a one-time favor.

Can I change the wording and pictures in the template?

Yes. Every template in AguMail's library is free on every plan, Free included. Choosing one copies it into your account and opens it in the email editor, where you can rewrite the text, change colors and swap the images.

Do I need WooCommerce to run this flow?

You can connect a WooCommerce store, or send carts through the AguMail API. Without one of those, the flow has no cart to trigger on.
